Picking Herbs to Plant in March

Posted on September 3, 2021

March is the ideal time to plant a variety of herbs. The best time of year to begin herb gardening is in early spring, but you may also plant herbs anytime of the year. It’s best to plant herbs in spring so that you have a consistent source of fresh leaves throughout the growing season. In early spring you’ll find that most herbs begin to bloom and will go to full blossom. You can keep them flowering throughout the season by taking good care of them.

Spring is the perfect month to get started growing herbs because you can enjoy their freshness for the entire growing season. The main herbs for planting in March are mint, parsley, dill, marjoram, sage, basil, oregano, and thyme. These are just a few of the many popular and easy to grow herbs that are perfect for growing in your home garden.

Mint and parsley are both extremely popular herb varieties. They make wonderful additions to sandwiches, hamburgers, pasta dishes, and even as a salad ingredient. They are best planted from seed, so be sure to purchase ones that are very small. Parsley is very delicate so be careful not to trim too much off or else it will lose its flavor. You should be able to easily trim a few leaves off each parsley herb. Mint is very aromatic and adds a little zest to any dish.

Dandelion and fennel are other herbs that are often included in herb gardens. Both are spring annual herbs that add flavor to salads and soups. Both are easy growing and will produce enough leaves to harvest in late summer. Once harvested they can be used as an herb or added to fruit trees.

Rosemary, marjoram, sage, chives, and oregano are all popular springtime herbs that can easily be planted in a raised bed. These herbs are best planted in partial sun and will bloom right before your nose is the only one not noticing. Planting them this way will give them the best chance to spread across your garden without being eaten by birds or other animals. They will also grow nicely next year if you decide to move them outdoors.

If you live in areas where winter is most predominant, you will want to be certain that your herb garden has adequate protection against frosts. In addition to providing needed warmth, planting herbs in March will provide you with the ideal weather conditions to enjoy the fresh herbs from seed as well as collecting and preserving the foliage that falls off. Lettuce, radishes, and broccoli are all excellent choices to have in your herb garden at this time of year. In fact, if you love planting and harvesting these healthy herbs, then April is the perfect time. The leaves on these plants will be full and beautiful with sweet, tangy flavors.

While planting any herb in March is perfect for your vegetable garden, there are a few that are particularly perfect for growing in this time of year. Daffodils, cherries, and strawberries will all thrive as cold hardy flowers in flower pots. Most people choose to plant strawberries because they produce the most fruit in the garden. While they will still produce fresh fruit, having these fruits in the late summer will yield even more harvests in March.

Many of the best growing herbs in March are easy to grow. Parsley, green beans, and cauliflower are all easy to care for. While they may be a little bit short on flavor, their small size makes them a perfect addition to any kitchen. If you do not have these fine fresh herbs in your kitchen yet, you will definitely start enjoying the health benefits they provide when you make the effort to add them. In no time at all, you will be harvesting until you have the most delicious herbs you can find to put into your own fresh herb recipe.
