Tips For Planting A Kitchen Garden In A Balcony

Posted on September 19, 2021

One of the most attractive features of apartment gardens is the kitchen garden in balcony. Apart from the added living space, apartment gardening in balconies offers you an opportunity to extend your apartment landscaping area. In fact, apartment gardening in balconies can turn out to be one of the most rewarding projects in landscaping. It can even become an economic exercise too!

To begin with, let us consider some of the features of a typical kitchen garden in balcony. A slab of concrete on the face of the balcony must be leveled and ready for the concrete mix. While preparing the concrete slabs for your kitchen garden in balcony, care must be taken to ensure that the concrete slab is built in a vertical plane. In case the slabs are built at an angle, it will make the construction process more difficult. Moreover, this slopping may affect the structural design of your kitchen garden.

For this reason, planning for your kitchen gardening in balconies should begin to level the concrete slab. You can then use a string of plants to grow horizontally along the string and allow them to grow vertically as well. While planning the layout of your plants and flowers, also include a small pond or fountain to mimic a natural water system in your garden. This can prove to be quite relaxing and enjoyable for you, while adding a touch of natural environment to your balcony gardening.

You may now prepare for the construction of the structure of your kitchen garden in balcony. The first step would be to dig out the slabs that are required to form the base of your balcony. Now lay a layer of crushed stone on the bottom slabs and level it using a level trowel. Then add the waterproofing membrane to the top of the concrete slab. This will help protect the floor from moisture, which can cause damage to the structural design. Make sure that the slabs are all aligned properly.

After ensuring that the base is ready, it is time for you to plant your kitchen garden in balcony. Make sure you plant all your flowering plants around the perimeter of the concrete slab. This will help block the direct sunlight from the flowering plants. Wait for the vegetation to settle before transplanting them. Remember to mulch the planting area once it starts to settle. If you have not planted any vegetation before, wait till you have planted your flowering plants before you transfer the compost kit.

When the planting is complete, remember to water the soil and keep the planting area moist. It is important to keep the soil moist because when the plant roots get too much water, they may rot. After a few weeks, you should be able to see the fruits of your labored labor.

Planting flowers in your kitchen garden in balcony require some patience and a lot of care. But if you are patient and if you know what you are doing, it can be very rewarding. In fact, it may even help you sell your house if you ever decide to move. So, plant lots of trees and bushes, so that your kitchen garden in balcony looks very attractive.

Your kitchen garden in balcony should look perfect and in good condition before you start using it. Take care to check on it regularly especially if you have children. Make sure to water the plants well and if need be, give them some fertilizer. Over time, your kitchen garden in balcony can transform into a beautiful space where you can have quality family time.
